Front Gate Strawberry Picking

The strawberry flags were flying. Within just a couple minute drive from base is the Yamadai Strawberry Farm. It is a a cute little greenhouse tucked into the neighborhood offering the sweetest strawberries I've ever tasted.

I'm not sure how I missed it the first time stationed here but I'm sure glad to discover them this time.

The strawberry picking season starts in January, is in it's peak January and February, but lasts all the way through May. The following table shows the prices for thirty minutes of picking by month for adults (top price) and children over three (bottom price).

I tried to take my mom while she was visiting but quickly learned that reservations were a must and they had to be made in advance as the picking was popular. Fleet and Family was helpful in making our reservations and I have a feeling they will be making more for us.

I just so happened to make our reservations for Easter morning. Going to the arboretum was always a tradition on Easter for my family, so maybe fruit picking will become one for ours.

We showed up in our Easter finery ready to pick before heading to church.

We were given two rows in the greenhouse that were ours to pick.

With a tray filled with sweetened milk on one side we started our thirty minutes of picking.

The rows were full of luscious red berries just waiting to be plucked off and eaten. They fruit was delicate and sweet and had a special aroma that hung in your mouth after eating it.

The plants were at the perfect height for the kiddos.

They picked and picked.

And I picked and picked.

My tray definitely filled up the fastest even with Baby B in my arms.

Thirty minutes passed quickly but by the end we had eaten our fill of the sweet fruit. Considering how much a tray of strawberries can cost here in Japan, the $11/adult spent was a deal.

After washing the juice from our fingers and chins we headed back to the car and were off to church.
