New Wheels

I'm proud to say that I made it through almost ten years of marriage without driving a minivan, but must admit I'm pretty excited to have one now! We picked out our Mazda MPV our first week in Japan but had to wait another week and a half to receive our driver's licenses so we could pick it up.

We looked at a lot of minivans before making the decision. I liked the MPV for it's dual sliding doors (very important when carrying a babyseat in a tight parking spot), removable bucket seats, and disappearing third row.

There are two major car dealers outside of base, Welcham's and Mr. Auto, and the average car/minivan is around ten years old and costs $1,500 to $2,500 (inspection and taxes included). The cars drive well, are in perfect cosmetic condition, and usually have less than 80,000 kilometers (50,000 miles). I understand the low miles as it is difficult to drive anywhere far but the perfect bodies still perplex me. I have a hard time staying dent free just parking.

The kids were excited to have their seats installed.

They quickly settled in for a drive around town.
